Too Much Discipline for my Pet?

I have a Hissing pet roach named Chip. He is very disobedient and always hisses at me. Usually whenever Chip is defiant I put him into the vacuum cleaner canister to shake him up a bit. Last night I caught him rummaging through a favorite bag of my potato chips, without hesitating I smashed him with A Wii remote controller that was in my hand. Chip stopped moving and I knew he was dead. I felt so sad and wished I had never gotten so angry, do you think that was too much discipline for Chip?
