How do you think the common qualities of southerners helped them defiant of the north?

Southerners were fighting to maintain their way of life. Their entire economy was based on slavery.As a result the South was ill-equipped to fight the North in a Civil War. The South seceded from the Union and formed the Confederate States of America. Their only hope was that England or France come to their side and provide the necessary arms and ammunition to fight the North. They (the South) might have had common qualities, but those don't win wars. When England and France refused to help them their cause was lost and so was the Civil War.
